In the name of Allah, the Gracious, the Merciful 

All praise is due to Allah. We praise him, we seek His help, we seek His forgiveness, and we seek refuge in Allah from the evil within ourselves and our evil deeds. Whoever Allah guides, there is none to misguide him. Whoever Allah leads astray, there is none to guide him. I testify there is no God but Allah alone, without any partners, and that Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, is His servant and His messenger. Allah Almighty said; 

O you who have faith, fear Allah as it is His right to be feared and do not die unless you are Muslims. (3:102) 

Fear Allah, from whom you ask each other, and in your family ties, for Allah is ever watchful over you. (4:1) 

Fear Allah and speak words as befitting. He will amend your deeds for you and forgive your sins. Whoever obeys Allah and His messenger has achieved a great triumph. (33:70-71) 

This was the most common characteristic on the surveys that we reviewed. In many cults, questioning, doubt, and dissent are often discouraged and even punished. The leaders and devote followers show no tolerance for any questions or critical inquiry about their practices or beliefs. In general, members are encouraged to turn off their independent thinking capabilities, and those who show the highest levels of blind commitment are favored over those who think independently. These groups emphasize obedience and submission over understanding. These organizations will be resistant to any type of change and continue to do certain things simply based off of “it always being done that way” or because this was the way that the leaders instructed something to be done.

The first step in dealing with any problem or issue is to identify the problem. The fact that you are reading this is one major sign that you may be involved in a cult. However, you may not be sure. Many people have extreme views on what a cult actually is. Due to a lack of education, some people believe that cults are only made up of crazy individuals who form suicide pacts, molest children, or go on murdering sprees. However, you must understand that there is no standard definition for a cult and cults come in virtually an unlimited amount of forms. Cults come in all shapes and sizes. To make a proper determination if your group is a cult, you must look at all the factors and characteristics as a whole and not in individually. There is no one single characteristic that will identify a group or organization as a cult.
